We’ve had some great offshore fishing the past week during the Christmas holiday. The offshore waters are alive with plenty of species to bend a rod.

We have been targeting blackfin tuna lately and doing well. These fish fight hard and are plentiful this time of year. In the mix there are usually bonito (false albacore), sailfish and sometimes even wahoo. The reef and wreck fishing is terrific in the winter months for snapper too. Mutton snapper, mangrove snapper and yellowtail are some of the best species. Along the reef there are plenty of spanish and cero mackerel too.

With our first cool front on its way the Keys will feel a little more comfortable come Thursday. With cooler weather (I mean it’s still in the 80s) the bite should get better and better.

The offshore waters are still holding some dolphin. Although most are on the smaller side, there are still a few big fish mixed in. Wahoo, sailfish, tuna and mackerel will also be on the move through the Keys.

On the wrecks there should be some nice hard fighting Amberjack and possibly some large bonito (false albacore). The deeper wrecks will have some mutton snapper and grouper to be had. Look for these fish to move into more shallow water as the fall months progress.

October sets the pace for fun winter fishing and November is often a hot month to be here and be in the offshore waters for blackfin tuna and sailfish.
